The adphos ThermoLab (aTL) combines synchronized in real time mass and temperature measurement to make drying, heating and other thermal processes visible throughout the entire treatment.
Measuring Mass and Temperature During Thermal Treatment
Anyone evaluating quality, adhesion, coating appearance, residual moisture, or material behavior needs reliable data from the thermal process itself. A single temperature value or a visual inspection after the fact often does not tell the full story. What matters is what happens inside the material during drying or thermal treatment.
The aTL makes this process continuously visible and measurable throughout the entire thermal treatment. During treatment with an adphos aNIR® module, the system records the sample’s mass change in the microgram range and the contactless temperature profile at millisecond-level time resolution. Together, these measurements show when and at what temperature a material loses mass, where drying, evaporation, or other thermally influenced effects occur, and how the sample temperature develops at the same time.
Evaluating Materials, Formulations and Process Parameters
The data becomes especially relevant when formulations, raw materials, substrates, coating weights, or other process parameters change. A material may dry earlier or later, react more sensitively to energy input, show different residual moisture values, or behave differently under otherwise identical settings. With the aTL, these effects can be investigated in a targeted way before larger test series or adjustments to production equipment are required.
The measurement can also support quality checks. Material batches or samples may look comparable but behave differently under thermal treatment. The combined mass and temperature profile helps classify these deviations more precisely and supports the verification of quality standards across batches.
Applications in Drying, Heating and Process Development
The aTL is relevant wherever drying, heating, evaporation, or thermally influenced material changes affect the process result. This includes coatings and prints with inks, lacquers, adhesives, or pastes, as well as functional layers, films, paper-based substrates, textile materials, and battery components.
The measured data can show the range in which a process is stable, where its limits are, and how changes in material or parameters influence the result. This provides a more reliable basis for process development, troubleshooting, quality control and scale-up decisions.
Testing, Rental and In-House Laboratory Use
Tests with the adphos ThermoLab are available at the adphos Application Center in Germany. In the United States, trials can also be carried out through adphos North America. In addition, the aTL is available to rent for internal test series or can be purchased for use in your own laboratory.
Understanding the thermal profile means less speculation. Formulation changes, material changes, and quality deviations can be evaluated more precisely because the process is not assessed only by its final result, but by the path that leads there.
